About SpaceX Starbase, TX, USA

Starbase is SpaceX's private development and launch site at Boca Chica on the southern tip of Texas, where the company builds and flies Starship — the fully reusable super-heavy launch system. Testing began here in 2019, and the surrounding community was incorporated as the city of Starbase, Texas in May 2025.

Integrated Starship and Super Heavy flight tests fly from the orbital launch pads beside the production site, sending the vehicle east over the Gulf of Mexico. A second orbital pad and tower have been built out to raise the flight rate.

Where to watch

Boca Chica beach and Highway 4 are closed by the county on launch days, so the public watches from across the water on South Padre Island — bring binoculars and expect heavy traffic for high-profile tests.

  • Isla Blanca Park, South Padre Island

The primary public viewing area, with an unobstructed view across the water about 5 miles from the launch tower.

  • South Padre Island waterfront

Hotels, condos and beaches at the south end of the island give clear sight lines across 5–6 miles of water.

  • Highway 48 pull-offs

Backup roadside spots between Port Isabel and Brownsville, roughly 8–10 miles from the pad.
