Canis Major — The Greater Dog
Canis Major is a constellation of the southern celestial hemisphere whose Latin name means "Greater Dog." It is one of the 48 constellations catalogued by the Greek astronomer Ptolemy in the Almagest during the 2nd century CE, and it remains one of the 88 modern constellations defined by the International Astronomical Union. The constellation occupies 380 square degrees of sky — ranking 43rd in size — and lies along the plane of the Milky Way in the second quadrant of the southern hemisphere, bounded roughly between right ascensions 06h 12.5m and 07h 27.5m and declinations −11° and −33°.
The constellation is overwhelmingly defined by a single star: Sirius (α Canis Majoris), which at apparent magnitude −1.46 is the brightest star in the entire night sky. No other star comes close to rivalling it in apparent brilliance, and its prominence has made Canis Major significant to astronomers, navigators, and calendar-keepers across every major ancient culture. The constellation is depicted as a large dog standing on its hind legs, following the hunter Orion and pursuing Lepus the Hare. It pairs with its smaller companion, Canis Minor, the Lesser Dog, on the other side of the Milky Way.
Beyond Sirius, Canis Major contains several other naked-eye stars of note — Adhara, Wezen, Aludra, and Murzim — all of them massive, luminous stars far more intrinsically powerful than Sirius but dimmed by their much greater distances. The constellation also hosts rich open star clusters, a contested nearby dwarf galaxy, a famous stellar association, and one of the most extreme individual stars known: the red hypergiant VY Canis Majoris. Best observed during the northern winter and southern summer, Canis Major is visible from latitudes between +60° and −90°.
Sirius: The Dog Star
Sirius, designated Alpha Canis Majoris, is a binary star system located approximately 8.6 light-years (about 2.6 parsecs) from Earth. It is the nearest naked-eye stellar system visible from most mid-northern latitudes and, after the Alpha Centauri system, the closest stellar system overall that can be seen without optical aid. Its apparent visual magnitude of approximately −1.46 makes it not merely the brightest star in Canis Major but the most dazzling point of light in the entire night sky, roughly twice as bright as Canopus, which ranks second.
The system consists of two stars in mutual orbit with a period of about 50 years. The primary, Sirius A, is a blue-white main-sequence star of spectral type A1 V. It has an effective temperature of around 9,940 K, a mass of approximately 2.0 solar masses, a radius of about 1.7 solar radii, and a luminosity roughly 20 to 25 times that of the Sun. Its absolute magnitude is about +1.43. Despite this considerable intrinsic luminosity, Sirius owes the lion's share of its apparent brilliance to its exceptional proximity.
The companion, Sirius B, is a white dwarf of spectral type DA2 — a burnt-out stellar remnant that was historically the first white dwarf ever identified. Although its mass is comparable to the Sun's (approximately 0.98 solar masses), it has contracted to roughly Earth's size, with a radius of about 12,000 km. Its surface temperature is approximately 25,000 K, far hotter than Sirius A, yet its tiny surface area results in a luminosity of only about 0.003 solar luminosities. Its apparent magnitude of about +8.4 to +8.7 makes it visible only through telescopes, often obscured in the glare of its brilliant companion. The orbit of Sirius B is significantly elongated; the two stars range between about 8 and 31 AU apart, with an average separation of around 20 AU — comparable to the distance between the Sun and Uranus.
The Sirius system is estimated to be roughly 200 to 300 million years old. The two stars did not begin as they appear today: the progenitor of Sirius B was originally the more massive star and evolved more quickly, swelling into a red giant and eventually shedding its outer layers to leave the white dwarf approximately 120 million years ago. Sirius A, the less massive star, is still burning hydrogen on the main sequence and will continue to do so for hundreds of millions of years.
The name Sirius derives from the ancient Greek word Seirios, meaning "glowing" or "scorching." Ancient Greeks and Romans associated its heliacal rising — its first reappearance above the eastern horizon just before dawn after a period of invisibility — with the oppressive heat of high summer. This gave rise to the phrase "dog days," still used today to describe the hottest and most stifling days of the year. In ancient Egypt, the heliacal rising of Sirius in June signalled the imminent flooding of the Nile and effectively marked the beginning of the Egyptian calendar year, giving the star — known to Egyptians as Sopdet, later associated with the goddess Isis — enormous religious and agricultural importance.
Other Principal Stars
While Sirius dominates Canis Major's identity, the constellation's remaining bright stars are remarkable objects in their own right. All are massive, highly evolved stars at great distances, their true luminosities far exceeding that of Sirius despite appearing fainter in the sky.
Adhara (Epsilon Canis Majoris) is the second-brightest star in the constellation, shining at apparent magnitude 1.50. It is a blue-white bright giant or supergiant of spectral type B2 II, situated about 430 light-years away. Adhara is intrinsically far more luminous than Sirius — more than 1,500 times so — and holds the distinction of being the brightest source of extreme ultraviolet radiation in the entire night sky. Looking back in time, about 4.7 million years ago Adhara was considerably closer to the Solar System; at that epoch it would have blazed at magnitude −3.99, brighter than any star in today's sky.
Wezen (Delta Canis Majoris) ranks third in the constellation at apparent magnitude 1.83. A yellow-white supergiant of spectral type F8 Ia, it lies roughly 1,800 light-years from Earth. Its intrinsic luminosity is so extraordinary that, if placed at Sirius's distance, it would far outshine every other star in the sky. Wezen marks the region where the dog's tail meets the body.
Aludra (Eta Canis Majoris) shines at magnitude 2.45 and marks the very tip of the Dog's tail. It is a blue-white supergiant of spectral type B5 Ia at a distance of roughly 3,000 light-years — the most remote of the constellation's major bright stars. Like Wezen and Adhara, it belongs to the population of highly luminous massive stars that inhabit the Galactic plane in this region of the sky.
Murzim (Beta Canis Majoris) and several other stars complete the figure of the dog, forming its forelegs, haunches, and face. Together with Sirius, Adhara, Wezen, and Aludra, they outline a large, recognisable figure that has guided observers for millennia.
Mythology and Cultural History
The stars of Canis Major have been observed and named by cultures across the ancient world, though the image of a dog is specifically a Greek and Roman contribution. Earlier traditions interpreted the same stars very differently.
The oldest known astronomical context for these stars comes from Mesopotamia. In Babylonian sky lore around 1100 BCE, as recorded in the Three Stars Each tablets and the later compendium MUL.APIN, Sirius was called KAK.SI.DI — an arrow aimed toward Orion — while the southern stars of what is now Canis Major, combined with part of the modern constellation Puppis, formed a bow named BAN. The arrow was associated with the warrior god Ninurta, and the bow with the goddess Ishtar, later linked to Marduk and the mythological slaying of the primordial chaos-serpent Tiamat. There was no dog in this scheme; the canine identification was a later Greek development that displaced the Mesopotamian bow-and-arrow imagery entirely.
Chinese astronomers likewise did not group these stars as a dog. They divided the region into several distinct asterisms, including the Military Market, the Wild Cockerel, the Bow and Arrow, and the Celestial Wolf — the last name applied to Sirius itself. This reflects an independent tradition of sky-mapping that predates Greek influence in East Asia.
In Greek mythology, Canis Major was most commonly identified with Laelaps, a supernatural hound of extraordinary gifts. The dog's origin varies across sources. In one tradition it was a gift from Zeus to Europa, eventually passing to her son Minos of Crete and then to Procris, daughter of King Erechtheus of Athens and wife of the hunter Cephalus. Another tradition credits Artemis as the original giver. Along with Laelaps, Procris received a javelin that never missed its mark — a gift that ultimately caused her tragic death when Cephalus accidentally struck her with it while hunting, leaving the magical dog in his possession.
The mythological climax of Laelaps's story involved the Teumessian fox, a monstrous creature ravaging the region of Boeotia. The fox was divinely fated never to be caught. Laelaps, however, was divinely fated always to catch whatever it pursued. When Cephalus set Laelaps on the fox, the chase created a logical paradox: an unstoppable hound pursuing an uncatchable quarry. Zeus resolved the impossible situation by turning both animals to stone and then placing Laelaps in the sky as the constellation Canis Major. Some tellings say the fox was also immortalised, associated with what became Canis Minor; others say only the dog was set among the stars.
The other major Greek tradition identifies Canis Major simply as one of Orion's hunting dogs, following the great hunter across the sky. Ancient authors including Homer, Hesiod, and Aratus described the constellation in this role, with Sirius sometimes imagined as blazing in the dog's mouth or face. The Roman author Manilius called it "the dog with the blazing face," and Germanicus Caesar wrote that it "belches forth fire from its mouth," vivid descriptions of Sirius's unsurpassed brilliance. In this reading, Canis Major pursues Lepus the Hare beneath Orion's feet, a celestial hunting scene frozen in the winter sky.
Roman writers added further identifications. Canis Major was sometimes called Custos Europae, the "Guardian of Europa" — the dog set to protect her who failed to prevent her abduction by Jupiter in the guise of a bull. It was also called Janitor Lethaeus, the "watchdog of Lethe," casting the constellation as a guardian at the threshold of the underworld in the manner of Cerberus. A third Greek identification linked the stars to Maera, the faithful dog of the Attic herdsman Icarius, who died of grief over his master and was placed in the sky when Icarius himself became the constellation Boötes.

Deep-Sky Objects
Canis Major lies along the Milky Way and contains a number of rewarding deep-sky objects for amateur astronomers, the majority of them open star clusters. The constellation lacks any prominent bright emission or reflection nebulae in the NGC catalogue; its observing reputation rests chiefly on its clusters and on the contested Canis Major Dwarf Galaxy.
Messier 41 (NGC 2287) is the showpiece cluster of the constellation, a large, bright open cluster located about 4° directly south of Sirius. At an apparent magnitude of around 4.5 to 5.0, it is easily visible with the naked eye under dark skies and resolves into a rich field of roughly 100 stars in binoculars or any small telescope. A prominent reddish star near the cluster's centre provides a striking colour contrast. It was likely observed in antiquity and was recorded by Charles Messier in the 18th century.
NGC 2362, sometimes called the Tau Canis Majoris Cluster, is a compact, strikingly bright open cluster dominated by the luminous O-type star τ Canis Majoris at its centre. With a visual magnitude of around 3.8 to 4.8, it is one of the brightest clusters in the constellation and appears as a tight spray of stars around the blazing central sun.
NGC 2360, known as Caroline's Cluster in honour of its discoverer Caroline Herschel, who found it in 1783, lies at a distance of about 3,700 light-years and glows at around magnitude 7.2. It is a rich and relatively old cluster, estimated at approximately 2.2 billion years old. Among its members are several blue straggler stars — objects that appear far hotter and younger than the cluster's age would allow, and which are thought to have formed through stellar mergers or collisions. Herschel herself described it as a "beautiful cluster of pretty compressed stars near half a degree in diameter."
NGC 2204 is a fainter and more obscure open cluster, located near the dog's front paw and forming a roughly six-degree triangle on the sky with Sirius and the planetary nebula IC 2165. It is a target for telescope users seeking less-visited objects beyond the constellation's showpieces.
The Canis Major Dwarf Galaxy
In 2003, a team of astronomers announced the discovery of a previously unrecognised dwarf galaxy candidate hidden behind the dense dust and gas of the Milky Way's disk, in the direction of Canis Major. The object was identified in infrared data from the Two-Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS), an all-sky infrared survey capable of penetrating the dust that blocks visible light. Because the Milky Way's own disk had obscured it from optical surveys, it had remained undetected despite lying extraordinarily close to Earth.
The Canis Major Dwarf, as it became known, lies approximately 25,000 light-years from the Sun and about 42,000 light-years from the Milky Way's centre. If confirmed as a genuine separate galaxy rather than an overdensity within the Milky Way's own disk, it would be the closest known galaxy to Earth — significantly nearer than the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. It is classified as a small irregular dwarf galaxy candidate, and it appears to be in the process of being gravitationally disrupted and absorbed by the Milky Way, with streams of stars being stripped from it along its orbit.
The status of the Canis Major Dwarf has been contested since its announcement. Some researchers have argued that the apparent overdensity of stars in that direction is an artefact of the Milky Way's own structure — a warp or flare in the disk — rather than the signature of a separate infalling galaxy. The debate continues in the astronomical literature, and the object is sometimes referred to as the Canis Major Overdensity to reflect this ambiguity.
VY Canis Majoris and the CMa OB1 Association
The region of Canis Major contains one of the most extreme individual stars known in the Milky Way: VY Canis Majoris, a red hypergiant and one of the largest and most luminous stars yet catalogued. It is a member of the Canis Major OB1 (CMa OB1) stellar association, a loose grouping of physically related massive young stars that includes multiple subgroups. The youngest confirmed members of CMa OB1 are less than 20 million years old. Gaia mission data have refined the membership and substructure of the association in recent years, confirming several distinct stellar groups within it, including the CMa R1 star-forming region.
VY Canis Majoris itself is famous for its extraordinary physical dimensions, high luminosity, and powerful stellar winds that drive intense mass loss. It is a key object for studying the late evolutionary stages of very massive stars — the processes by which such stars shed material before ending their lives in supernova explosions. Its position in Canis Major OB1 places it in the context of a broader region of recent and ongoing high-mass star formation along the Galactic plane.
What Makes Canis Major Remarkable
At 8.6 light-years, the Sirius system is the closest stellar system that the majority of people in the northern hemisphere can see without a telescope — making Canis Major a window to the Sun's immediate stellar neighbourhood.
Predicted from Sirius A's proper-motion wobble by Friedrich Bessel in 1844 and confirmed visually in 1862, Sirius B established that stars could collapse to Earth-sized densities — a discovery foundational to stellar evolution theory.
About 4.7 million years ago, when Adhara was much closer to the Solar System, it would have blazed at magnitude −3.99 — brighter than any star in today's sky, including Sirius.
Despite being outshone visibly by Sirius, Adhara (ε CMa) emits more extreme ultraviolet radiation than any other star visible from Earth, making it the dominant source in that part of the spectrum.
Discovered in 2003 from infrared survey data, the candidate dwarf galaxy in Canis Major lies only about 25,000 light-years from the Sun — potentially the nearest galaxy yet identified, hidden until recently behind Milky Way dust.
The stars of Canis Major were mapped as a celestial bow (BAN) and arrow (Sirius as KAK.SI.DI) in Babylonian astronomy circa 1100 BCE, associated with the gods Ninurta and Ishtar — a completely different mythological framework from the Greek dog imagery that eventually prevailed in Western astronomy.
